Tomatoes are native to South and Central America and have been cultivated there since 3,000 years. From the Spanish colonisation, they came to Europe and even spread to Asia. Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamins A, C and folic acid. Tomato plants are started in a nursery and are transplanted at a height of 10 cm after which they can be harvested in 3 months. Tomato requires an average temperature of 21 degrees C to grow well. Tomatoes should be harvested before they are completely ripe to get a uniform flavour, texture and size on them. The tomato is used in almost everything that you cook, but our favourite tomato food is a simple Basil Tomato Soup where the subtle aroma of basil gets entwined with the tanginess of tomatoes; what's yours?
