Bitter Gourd is a native of India, so much so that its Hindi word "karela" has now officially made it to the Oxford Dictionary. It is a creeper plant with alternate leaves and the fruit is eaten much before it becomes ripe. It is used extensively in Indian curries as well as in Ayurveda for treating diabetes, cough and ulcers.
