Beets are grown for their edible taproots and leaves. Chopped, cooked, spiced beet is a common side dish in Indian cuisine. Historically, from the Middle Ages, beet has been used as a treatment for a variety of conditions, especially illnesses relating to digestion and the blood. Beets is also recommended with garlic to nullify the "garlic breath". Best grown in moderate climates, beets are ready to harvest in about 2 months from the time of sowing.
